Sonia Rio

Sonia Río is the General Director of Fundación Diversidad, Spain’s leading nonprofit advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across Spanish businesses.

Born in Bern, Switzerland, to Spanish parents, she holds a law degree from the University of Bern and began her career at the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, managing peace promotion and human rights programs in Guatemala and Mexico.

She served as Coordinator of the Human Rights Program of Mexico City (2008–2010) and later as General Director of Equality Policies in the Mexican federal government (2011–2016), where she led national initiatives to promote non-discrimination and gender equality. Since 2019, Sonia has led Fundación Diversidad, focusing on promoting the Diversity Charter to integrate real diversity management into the strategic agendas of companies and organizations in Spain.

An expert in public policy design, lobbying, and stakeholder engagement, she has over 15 years of experience introducing human rights and non-discriminatory policies across both governmental and non-governmental sectors.
Under her leadership, Fundación Diversidad has expanded its influence through corporate engagement, research initiatives like the Innodiversity Index, and strategic partnerships. A global-minded professional, Sonia is deeply committed to embedding DEI into business strategy, leadership accountability, and organizational culture.
